Restaurant Summary by Allan Borgen:

For over 46 years, Backstreet has been serving some of the finest Deli foods and Sandwiches in Riverside off of Nelson Street off of Brockton ave.

A little history: In 1953 Mac & Barbara McCluskey relocated to Riverside from Los Angeles. In Riverside they opened a childrens clothing store, “Peter Pan Shop”  in the Hardman Center. In 1958 they moved the business to the Riverside Plaza and in the spring of 1959 it sold.

Mac & Barb then opened the “Beachcombers Club”. They offered after school events, swimming and diving classes plus volleyball and social events for adults and children. 1963 they sold the business and in 1967 bought the “Nelson Street Market”. renovated it into the “Backstreet Restaurant”. The Backstreet made the best Pastrami and Corned Beef Sandwiches on the West Coast. The potato salad is the best you’ve ever had. The banana creme pie is world famous. We have been voted the Best Lunch Place, Best Outdoor Dining, Best Kept Secret, Best Power Lunch, Best Garden Lunch Place. The Inland Empire Magazine Voted us the Best Sandwiches and Best Outdoor Dining in the Inland Empire the last two years.

In 2000 Mac & Barb were ready to retire. They sold the business to there youngest daughter Kitty and her husband Keith Holloway.

Keith and Kitty continue to cook and slice all the meat fresh every day, have kept everything the same as Mom & Dad had started it. They have however, added the tuna sandwich as well as two salads. The Caesar has pistachios and the spinach salad has craisins, pistachios and shaved parmesan cheese with raspberry vinaigrette.

My favorites are the lean Pastrami Sandwich, Corned Beef Sandwich as well as the Hot Roast beef. Make sure you order the homemade baked beans for your side dish and fill up on their complimentary salad bar station, where you can get a whole assortment of sides like kosher deli pickles to compliment your sandwiches and salads.

You really need to give Backstreet Deli a try! See why generations of fans come back again and again.

  1. I won a gift certificate for a sandwich. I tried Backstreet for the first time and I have to tell you it was one of the best Roast Beef Sandwich I have had. The owners made you feel welcome. The employees were great. I also tried the Banana cream Pie. Oh my go she it was great.

I paid for my wife’s meal and although the prices are a bit high it was worth it. Her sandwich soda and pie was $18.00.

    Thank you.

  2. I sure wish there were more pictures of all the different sandwiches and other options. I eat with my eyes at times, but I always get the same thing at Backstreet. Would love to see what other sammies look like…I might want to be daring one day and try something new :)

  3. The food is good, but I could have made this entire dish at home for a fraction of the cost and very little effort. My husband got the corned beef and I got the turkey. The meat and bread were good, but nothing I could not have gotten at the market. The side of baked beans tasted like they were straight from a can and nothing from the veggie bar was all that great eigther. It would have been ok, but each meal was $11 (that’s without drinks). WAY over priced for what you get. A pretty dining area only gets a restaurant so far.

  4. I won gift certificates, had never eaten there. Went with a friend on July 18th. I had whole roast beef with potato salad, my friend had 1/2 roast beef with Ceasars salad and coleslaw. The French rolls are wonderful! The beef exceedingly tender and an enormous portion! The coleslaw and potato salad were ok, but a bit more vinagery than we like. My friend loved her salad, was extra fresh and great dressing. The picoles and raw vegetables you get for free, try the pickled cucumbers they’re really great. I will be going here again. Parking is tight so come early or late if you can. Friendly and helpful staff too, wonderful garden area to eat in, a lot of shade.
