Restaurant Summary by Allan Borgen:

If you enjoy a great deli sandwich, Citrus Deli is certainly a great choice. Located between Albertson’s and Rite Aid on Redlands Blvd in Redlands, this small family owned and operated restaurant features fresh, delicious and affordable cold and hot subs & sandwiches, salads, freshly made soups, wraps and delicious naan pizzas. You can personalize each sandwich with yours choice of rolls & breads, cheeses, meats, and over 33 condiments and fresh veggies.

You may think this is a clone of a Subway store but believe me when I tell you that the food served here has no resemblance to the other large chain sandwich shops. Some of my favorites are the Italian Sub which consists of a large portion of sliced Italian salami, pepperoni and capicola, homemade Italian dressing and your choice of fillings, the Pulled Chicken Salad Sandwich featured lots of moist white chicken breast meat tossed with celery, green onion and a special mayo sour cream dressing, the popular Meatball Sandwich smothered in a homemade marinara sauce with provolone cheese, and the classic Reuben Sandwich with lots of slices of lean corned beef with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island Dressing on toasted rye bread.

Owners Russell and Judy Barnes and their son Chris have competed and have won numerous awards for their Salsas, Sancho Blanco Chile Verde Sauce, their incredible Chili and for their Red Chile Sauce. They also won $10,000 at a celebrity food show competition and have been invited to compete in many national and world championship food competitions, so these people really know food.

I also highly recommend the Chile Verde Burrito, chunks of pork slowly cooked in their award winning and delicious Chile Verde sauce stuffed inside a flour tortilla, oven toasted and topped with more Chile Verde and cheese. Their all meat Chili has a wonderful mild kick of heat to it and is definitely one of the best I have ever tasted and I have judged Chili Cook-off’s before.

Another unique item is their Indian Naan bread pizza that are made fresh from a local Indian restaurant and topped with your choice of creamy spinach artichoke spread with your choice of meats, cheese and veggies, a BBQ Chicken pizza with sliced red onions,  or Cheese with Italian Sausage, or a Cheese and Veggie naan pizza. I suggest getting the garlic naan since garlic adds a nice delicate taste to all of the pizzas.

In addition to the above items, I love their side salads that are made fresh on the premises and include their Cole Slaw with onions, dried cranberries, and roasted pecans, the fantastic Red Potato Salad with green onions, shredded cheese, bacon and homemade ranch dressing , the palate pleasing Macaroni Salad with sweet peppers, chopped olives, celery, onions and chopped pickles and the unique Turkey Waldorf  Salad, chunks of turkey with apples, walnuts, cranberries and celery in their house creamy mayo sour cream dressing.

They also serve some cold refreshing Smoothies as well as some East Coast favorites like the popular Crumb Cake, moist Muffins, large Black & White Cookies and Chocolate Dipped Macaroon cookies. Citrus Deli is truly a great restaurant to dine at or have them cater your next business or social event. I really like eating here and know you will too

  2. Wow! Definitely not your typical fast-food deli. This mom-and-pop deli is more than just a cut above the rest. Several things set Citrus Deli apart from the typical deli experience. For starters, all of their soups and sides are prepared on the premises, and every single one we tried today was excellent. Don’t let the tiny shop fool you–they have a more extensive selection of sandwiches, sides, and pizzas than practically any deli I’ve been to in ages. If you want to sample any of their delicious sides, ask and they will give you a nice helping to try. They have some sides that are prepared daily, others on a rotating basis. Today we tried their jambalaya, and it was almost as good as that my Southern grandma used to make. Since they use smoked sausage instead of andouille, it was not quite as spicy as I am used to but still delish!

As I stated before, it’s not your typical fast food—some sandwiches and pizzas take longer to prepare than others, so some diners may get their food out of the order in which it was requested. Even so, it is well worth the wait. My hubby’s Rueben sandwich was one of those that takes longer, but he was very happy with it. On Allan Borgen’s recommendation, I tried the spicy Philly cheesesteak sandwich, and it did not disappoint.

As far as portions go, they are very big portions. Even the sides with a sandwich combo are the same size as a small side order would be. In fact, there was so much food, we will be having the leftovers for dinner!

Their sides are so good, I even ordered a side of chili and a side of jamablaya to bring home with me.

The owners are gracious and friendly, as is their staff. We live in Rancho Cucamonga, and will have no problem driving back to Citrus Deli in Redlands frequently. I highly recommend Citrus Deli. Once you try it, you WILL be going back!

  3. I ordered a classic Reuben sandwich and while it was delicious, they were out of rye bread.at 1115A on a Saturday. Thankfully, sourdough is always a good plan B. The staff was really polite & friendly. They made me feel like a valued guest the whole time I was there.

  4. You have my mouth watering. I’ll be sure to come in and say Hello too.

  5. When we tried Citrus Deli, it was a little bit crowded, so my husband stood in line while the kids and I sat to wait to place our order. One of the ladies behind the counter was gracious enough to offer the kids some packaged cookies and ask if we wanted to get our drinks while we were waiting. These were small things, but it impressed me because it showed a true concern for their customers.

We ordered a reuben, an Italian sub, a build-your-own wrap, and a kids sandwich. The Italian sub, in particular, was huge and delicious. As with all the sandwiches, the customer is able to choose from a variety of meats, cheeses, and veggie toppings. My husband opted to pay an extra 50 cents for ghost pepper cheese, though any of the other cheeses were included in the price. The cheese was well worth the extra change, and the sandwich was well worth the visit.

My daughter built her own wrap, selecting meet, cheese, and several veggies. Again, it was huge and tasty. My son was being a picky eater that afternoon and asked for just bread, white cheese, and pepperoni.

When they went to ring us up, we actually had to ask them to double check that they hadn’t forgotten something because the price (even taking into account the $10 gift card) was so incredibly low it didn’t seem like it could include enough. Because my toddler was able to select what he wanted on his sandwich, I expected to be charged at the full menu price; instead, his sandwich only cost a couple of bucks–again, I was impressed at the fact that they knew how to meet the needs of customers so well.

We didn’t get a chance to try any of the sides or desserts because when we saw the size of the sandwiches, we knew we just wouldn’t be able to finish them (and we had only ordered the regular size!). Next time, I think I’ll try one of the burritos–I saw several being made, and they looked good. My daughter has her eye on a monster black and white cookie. We’ll definitely be back.
