Restaurant Summary by Allan Borgen:

The Corner Butcher Shop in La Verne is a unique and exciting store that offers a array of beef, pork, poultry, fish, seafood and exotic meats as well as a full deli counter, a nice selection of California wines and some delicious hot entrees and sandwiches that you can enjoy in their store.

All of the fresh meats are either Prime or 8% Upper Choice graded beef. In other words, you can’t get any better meat than what they sell here. Like all good butcher shops, all of the meats are cut on the premises and if you enjoy homemade sausages, you must try one or more of their 21 sausages including Bratwurst with Cheese, Chicken Apple, Smoked Andouille, Linguisa, Swedish, all kinds of Italian sausages and for those who like English sausages, they offer a great peppery Cumberland sausage. Master Sausage Maker Eric Murray has been making sausages for over 43 years and his experience really shows in all of the impressive 1/3 lb. sausages.

In a nearby freezer case, you can also take home a selection of exotic meats like buffalo, ostrich, elk, venison, kangaroo, rabbit, veal, goose, Kobe beef and others, each ready to be cooked and enjoyed at your home.

As good as the meats, pork, fish, seafood and sausages are, the sandwiches are even better. Their sausages, chili and hot dogs are made from end cuts of their meats (cuts that are too small to make steaks from) and little or no fillers are used. You can dine in their store sitting on two long tables and a counter or take the food out. All of their sandwiches are priced at $7.65 and include a freshly made side salad or a bag of chips. I would definitely go for the sides like their delicious North Carolina Cole slaw made with Catalina dressing, their feta cheese and olive salad, a pasta salad with cube of cold cuts, a wonderful smoked chicken salad and a hearty potato salad.

I started my order out with the homemade Hot Dog Sandwich, their popular Tri Tip Sandwich, and their Pastrami Sandwich. When I say Hot Dog, I don’t meat those hot dogs everyone else sells. I’m talking about a fantastic hot dog made with quality cuts of perfectly seasoned dense ground beef and pork. The “dog” was served on a freshly baked bun and the delicious dense textured hot dog and bun with mustard was by far the best hot dog I have eaten. On certain Fridays, you can get their hot dogs for only $1.00. Don’t forget to ask them when they will be offering them at that price when you drop in. I love these doggies! The Tri Tip Sandwich featured of a nice portion of sliced tri tip that was

first marinated and then seasoned and grilled served on your choice of squaw, wheat, rye, sourdough or a wheat or French roll. In addition to the delicious tender tri tip, lettuce, tomato and a tangy sweet BBQ sauce are added to the sandwich.  Like almost everything else they make, their pastrami is made on the premises and is lean, has lots of flavor and is juicy and tender. Pickles and mustard is served with the pastrami on your choice of breads or rolls.

My second flight of dishes included the BBQ Brisket Sandwich, Pulled Pork and a customer inspired Steak & Cheese Panini sandwich. The Brisket was slowly cooked and smoked and was absolutely perfect in every sense. It was tasty, juicy and oh so good. The addition of their BBQ sauce really made for one fine sandwich. Speaking of fine, their #1 selling sandwich is the Pulled Pork and after tasting it, I see why. The pork was shredded, extremely tender and mixed with their BBQ sauce. This was definitely one of the better pulled pork sandwiches I have had. My final sandwich, the Steak & Cheese Panini, was the best of the best! This spectacular sandwich, which was requested by a customer, consists of two pieces of sourdough bread filled with a large 10 oz or so sirloin steak, Swiss cheese, grilled bell peppers & onions and a zesty horseradish sauce. It was then pressed and the results were a sandwich made in culinary heaven. I highly recommend this sandwich.

In closing, whether you dine in, take out, cook at home or want some truly incredible catered sandwiches, deli trays & hot entrees for your next party or office function, Chef Ricky Brewer and owners John & Will Fuelling will be glad to make your dining and shopping experience a memorable one.
